I was a DJ for 25 years. I started Fresh FM, which is now the most successful community radio station in Australia. I really love dance music, and if I had to sing at a karaoke night, no doubt I’d do Nutbush City Limits to get everyone up and dancing. But I also liked maths at school, and helping people, so when I met an accountant through my family I realised that would be something I’d enjoy.
I love listening to clients and finding solutions. Plenty of times it isn’t financial advice – it might be about taking the dog for a walk, or finding other ways for them to relax from their business and enjoy themselves. I also love building a team and creating opportunities for our staff to advance.
Swimming is a meditation for me, it clears my mind. I’m the treasurer of the Western Districts swim club, compete in the Masters Games and have swum the Jetty to Jetty Swim every year since 1986. I think balance in life is important. People might be surprised that their accountant won a gold medal in the World Life Saving Championships in 2012. I can say, ‘That’s going straight to the pool room’ because I have the medal in a glass cabinet in my man cave, which does in fact have a pool table in it.
